A Case Study in the Method

“How Can I Do This Without Records?” — A Reader Asks

If you’re wondering whether it’s possible to do this work if you don’t have biographers and genealogists in your family, you’re not alone.

Last week, in the comments section to “Confronting My Racist Ancestors: The Method,” a good friend of mine, Eric, vulnerably shared details about his own family, and posed some thoughtful questions about whether and how my approach might apply to him.

I decided I’d like to show Eric and this community how I would go about starting this work if I were him.

I reached out to him and asked whether he had any objection to me using his immigrant parents as examples of how I would apply my method in the absence of significant personal information about one’s ancestors. I also offered him the opportunity to read a draft of my response before I posted it. He agreed and reviewed a draft of this post, then we discussed it.
